The Project
Droste-Landschaft : Lyrikweg is a themed trail project of the Annette von Droste zu Hülshoff-Stiftung that is funded by the Europäische Fonds für Regionale Entwicklung (EFRE). It develops the path between Burg Hülshoff and Haus Rüschhaus, to which the poet Droste-Hülshoff (1797-1848) often withdrew in the second half of her life, into a playful, diverse themed trail. The poetry path invites locals and tourists alike to hike through the landscape on the trail of Droste-Hülshoff, experience the presentation of contemporary literature and historic texts in public space and observe nature of the course of the year and in times of change.
Founded in 2012, the Annette von Droste zu Hülshoff Foundation is responsible for the two architectural monuments Burg Hülshoff and Haus Rüschhaus and works out of these two authentic birthplaces and residences of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. According to its bylaws, the purpose of the foundation is to preserve and promote the cultural and art historical values associated with the name Droste zu Hülshoff and to communicate these in a contemporary manner to interested parties as well as researchers. Within this framework, the foundation established Burg Hülshoff – Center for Literature (CfL) in 2018.
In the years 2019 to 2021, Droste-Landschaft : Lyrikweg was realized as a cultural tourism project to support the regional economy and increase the attractiveness of the landscape by the Droste Foundation together with the LWL-Literaturkommission für Westfalen in close collaboration with the regional small- and medium-sized enterprises as well as through cooperations with a wide variety of partner institutiosn from the region and the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (Landscape Association of Westphalia-Lippe).
Droste-Landschaft : Lyrikweg now functions as an outdoor museum between Burg Hülshoff and Haus Rüschhaus and thus fulfills three goals. First of all, the project has created an attractive, themed path between the two locations. Secondly, it brings the life and works of the poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff as a significant player in the regional cultural history and literature to the attention of a wide audience - over the course of 11 places with information boards and 10 smaller stops, bringing together Droste’s texts, podcasts with experts, a hiking book and a children’s book as well as contributions from contemporary artists and authors. Thirdly, it supports the thematic and economic network of Burg Hülshoff and Haus Rüschhaus with suitable small- and medium-sized enterprises in the region.
As an EFRE project with a correspondingly high standard of quality, Droste-Landschaft : Lyrikweg strengthens the quality strategy of tourism in the Münsterland region.
The translation of the texts of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff take place through the project Trans|Droste, a collective of contemporary artists who have found a new, shared modality for the translation of Droste’s texts. The project was established by Burg Hülshoff - Center for Literature.
Trans|Droste is funded by the project fund of the German Translation Fund as part of the program Neustart Kultur by the German Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.
